Hello there and happy Monday! Why do weekends always go way too fast!?
Anywho, since I’m just starting this blog and am still new to making it my own unique space and am planning posts, I thought I would re-post one of my favorite posts from my previous blog. Since this blog is geared toward my love of running and life adventures, I wanted to share with you a few reasons as to why I run. Enjoy!

“Running.” This form of exercise that I hate one day and love the next makes me feel alive. Running brings strength, sweat, pain, tears, and happiness to my daily routine. I see this word and realize how much it has become such a major part of my life. I realize how running has helped shape me into the young woman that I am today. Doris Brown Heritage, a pioneer in women’s distance running, states seemingly how much running pushes physical and mental limitations.
So why do I run?
This question is asked time and time again and I assume always will be asked as I continue to run. There are so many reasons to run! And I want to share with you some of my reasons. 🙂
1. Running tests my mental and physical strength AND encourages me to better myself.
Running gives me the opportunity to prove to myself that I CAN go a little faster and I CAN go a little further. Running is really mental for me. If I train properly for a race I am physically ready. I have done all that I can to be ready. On race day, the mental aspect is the test. There’s that little voice that asks “Can you really do this? …Can you really get a PR?…Are you really ready?”
Well, the answer is usually always YES! You’re ready if you have been training. And part of that training is training yourself mentally. I just love how running tests my mental and physical strength! Competition is a big factor that plays into my mental strength.
Running is a competition with myself. Competing with myself sparks energy, which advances me in becoming a stronger, faster, and better runner (and occasionally there’s that one person in a race that I’ve been running next to the whole race I have to beat with a surge at the finish line. That’s just my competitive side coming out with all of the adrenaline at the end of a race)!
In the end, I know that whether it be a good run or bad run, the outcomes of running a road race or even just running an everyday run are usually more rewarding than not.
2. Running is a common interest I share with my husband.
Running with my husband, Aaron, is definitely a new aspect that changed the element of running for me.
Running is a common interest in our marriage. But running together wasn’t something that we did together right away. We would talk about running and how much we both liked it. But I was so scared to run with Aaron. He was so fast and I didn’t want him to judge my running. I ran for the health and mental benefits and he ran competitively.
Before we ever ran together Aaron was always looking forward to our first run together as a couple. And I just didn’t want it to happen! Talk about two opposite ends of the spectrum! But as our relationship grew, my fears of being judged changed. And now when I run without Aaron I feel like a part of me is missing. So, to simply put it, I run because my husband runs. 🙂
3. Running helps me in being disciplined with many aspects in life.
Discipline is one of my top strengths. I’m one of those people that thrives on checklists and schedules. Running feeds this like no other! If I don’t finish one thing during the day, running gives me that one “to-do item” to check off the list. It gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Running also allows me to be more discipline with the food that I put into my body. I don’t run as well if I eat food that doesn’t have high nutritional value. I always tell myself, if you eat better, you run better! And it’s really so true and that simple.
Running disciplines my sleep schedule. Get a good night of sleep and you’ll run better!
Running has taught me time management. If I plan out my week and add my run in, I am more likely to run than if I don’t put it in my schedule. This is another very simple thing that can make all the difference.
Ultimately, running disciplines my eating habits, sleeping schedule, and betters my time management skills. Can’t go wrong with any of that ! 😉
4. My Body is a gift from God.
Finally, I run because my body is a gift from God.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 says;
“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”
Running keeps my body healthy and strong. My body is God’s temple, therefore I should treat my body as God’s temple. This includes eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis. I am by no means saying that I always treat my body with respect. I fall short of this because of my sinful nature.
Treating my body well is something that I have struggled with since I was a teenager. I would compare myself to other girls (especially those in the Hollywood world). I wanted to be “skinny” like a celebrity. In my mind, I was never pretty enough or skinny enough. I compared myself and wanted to be skinny so bad that I didn’t treat my body with respect.
Then I started to run. Running long distances and completing half marathons encouraged me to realize that my body was unique and that God created me to be “Mary.” As I grew and became accustomed to running, my physical and mental limitations were pushed in a good way! I no longer felt I had to look like a stick thin model. I became stronger and fit. I came to the realization that my body is a gift from God and that I should treat it that way. God made me unique and he created my body to be His temple.
I still struggle with “body image,” and I realize that I will most likely always struggle with this, because of sin. But running has helped immensely. I thank God every day for my body and that I am physically able to run. David writes so eloquently in Psalm 139: 13-14;
“For you formed my inward parts;you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
